Michael Smart
Professor Smart graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) at UQ in 1985 and obtained a Master of Engineering Science at UQ in 1987. After working for 4 years in the Engineering Consultancy Industry in both Australia and the UK, he began a PhD at the Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, New York, in the area of shock wave/vortex interaction, graduating in 1995. He then spent 10 years as a research scientist in the Hypersonic Airbreathing Propulsion Branch at NASA's Langley Research Center in Virginia, performing research and testing on 3-D scramjet flowpaths. In 2005 he returned to Australia and was appointed as an Associate Professor in the Centre for Hypersonics at UQ. In 2006 he became Head of the HyShot Group, and in 2007 was appointed Professor and Chair of Hypersonic Propulsion. As head of UQ's HyShot Group, he leads scramjet flowpath related research within the Centre for Hypersonics, with particular emphasis on flight applications.
